Pastelitos and Cafecito, Coffee with my Grandparents

We all have memories of growing up that are extra special, extra memorable, extra, everything. I must admit that I’ve been feeling nostalgic as we continue working on El Cafecito de mis Abuelitos, a book that is personally very special to me. Sifting through memories and committing them to simple illustrated form is an interestingContinue reading “Pastelitos and Cafecito, Coffee with my Grandparents”

What’s in a Name?

“Why did you choose the name Colorful Swans Press, and what does it mean? Do you just really like swans? Or was it a totally random thing?” I’ve been asked this question a few times this week, all from seemingly unrelated people and at totally different times. And so I thought, maybe it’s worth writingContinue reading “What’s in a Name?”

A Book and a Spring Day

Growing up one of my favorite things to do was grab a book and head outside. It was very rural where we lived, and there was plenty of space to find a spot under a tree to relax and read. The grass was green, and the breeze was cool. The only sounds were the whispersContinue reading “A Book and a Spring Day”

What We Read this Week: Perfectly Pegasus

Have you ever wished on a shooting star? To be honest, I’m not totally sure that I’ve ever seen a shooting star before. But next time I see one for sure I’m going toContinue reading “What We Read this Week: Perfectly Pegasus”

Audiobooks are Awesome!

Do you listen to audiobooks? I know that there are differing opinions on this subject, but I love audiobooks! There was a time (in the not so recent past), that my reading had dwindled to pretty close to nothing. At the end of the day when I finally had a chance to read I wasContinue reading “Audiobooks are Awesome!”

What We Read this Week: Have You Ever Seen a Flower?

Spring is here, and even though we live in the desert, there is green and there are flowers everywhere, when you look closely. I love searching for flowers during our walks. We find all of the colors we can, seeing how many different kinds of flowers we can discover in our neighborhood before we arriveContinue reading “What We Read this Week: Have You Ever Seen a Flower?”

Coffee, familia and a Bilingual Book

Growing up in a Cuban American family, I remember how much I loved my Grandparents’ little house in Kendall, Miami. It was a magical place to me—filled with light, and bright colors, delicious food, and coffee. Always coffee. The coffee my grandparents loved to drink was their “cafecito,” Cuban espresso, with a lot of azúcarContinue reading “Coffee, familia and a Bilingual Book”

The Beginning

I remember very clearly the moment that I first knew I wanted to publish a book. I remember drawing the pictures—the story was about a squirrel who learns to fly. I wrote in the text as carefully as I could. I had bad handwriting then, it’s just as bad now. Thank goodness for typing 🙂Continue reading “The Beginning”
