Literary Word of the Week: What is a Mood Reader?

Have you heard of the term “mood reader?”

For this Saturday’s literary word of the week, we’re going to talk about the term “mood reader.” 📚

A mood reader is someone who prefers not to stick to a rigid reading list or a predetermined schedule. Instead, they let their emotions guide them through the shelves, picking up whatever book resonates with their current state of mind. Are you a mood reader of more of a planner?

This is a term I recently became familiar with, and lately it fits my reading habits pretty perfectly. I’m not great at maintaining a TBR list (to be read) and tend to just pick whatever book I’m in the mood for. Hence, a mood reader!

I like to think of mood reading as a culinary adventurer who savors different dishes based on their mood, rather than following a recipe step by step. Mood readers approach their book choices with a similar mindset, letting their emotions and inclinations dictate their literary escapades. Whether they’re craving a romance, a thriller, or a thoughtful memoir, mood readers trust their instincts to lead them to the perfect read for the moment.

Here are a few reasons why embracing your inner mood reader can enrich your reading experience:

  1. Spontaneity: One of the greatest joys of mood reading is the element of surprise. You never know what literary gem you might stumble upon when you let your mood guide your choice. It’s like embarking on a spontaneous adventure every time you crack open a new book.
  2. Enhanced Emotional Connection: When you read a book that aligns with your current emotions, the connection you feel with the story and its characters becomes even more profound. Whether you’re seeking solace in a familiar narrative or seeking catharsis through a character’s journey, mood reading allows you to engage with literature on a deeply emotional level.
  3. Flexibility: Unlike sticking to a rigid reading list, being a mood reader offers unparalleled flexibility. You’re not bound by deadlines or obligations; instead, you have the freedom to explore different genres and authors at your leisure. It’s like having a literary buffet at your fingertips, where you can sample a little bit of everything based on your mood.
  4. Self-Discovery: Paying attention to your reading moods can also provide valuable insights into your own emotions and psyche. Are you gravitating towards light-hearted comedies during stressful times? Or perhaps you find comfort in diving into dark, introspective novels when you’re feeling contemplative. By observing your reading patterns, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your emotional needs.
  5. Adaptability: In a fast-paced world where our moods can fluctuate from one moment to the next, being a mood reader equips you with the adaptability to navigate life’s ups and downs. Just as you can pivot between genres based on your mood, you learn to navigate the complexities of life with grace and resilience.

I like to read according to how I’m feeling, but I have a lot of friends who do the exact opposite and keep very organized TBR lists. Ultimately though, no matter how you choose what you read, the most important thing of all is to read and to enjoy your reading experience! Everyone has their own process for choosing their next read, and they are all great. I hope that you are getting the chance today to read something that you love ❤️

Happy Reading,
