I have a soft spot for mischievous cats. I think cats are hilarious, with big opinions and attitudes. Growing up we had a bad cat calendar, a picture of a naughty cat for every day. Some of those pictures I still remember, and they still make me laugh. I know a lot of people are dog people, and I love all animals, both dogs and cats. But there is something about a cat and their attitude that I can’t resist 🐱 ❤️
So naturally, the Bad Kitty books are some of my favorites! I love that funny, wild-eyed Bad Kitty. She’s just so bad. And since we’re getting closer and closer to Valentine’s Day, this edition of What We Read This Week we chose “Bad Kitty Does Not Like Valentine’s Day,” by Nick Bruel, published by Roaring Brook Press.
In this Valentine’s Day-themed tale, Kitty, the naughty cat protagonist, is not a fan of the holiday. Why? Because no one has given her a Valentine! The story unfolds as Kitty contemplates the idea that maybe, just maybe, to receive a Valentine, she needs to give one herself. However, navigating the world of expressing affection turns out to be more challenging than expected. Bad Kitty hasn’t exactly been nice to anyone this year.
The mix of humor and sweetness catches the attention of readers, ensuring that there are a lot of laughs along the way. As Kitty attempts to understand the art of Valentine’s Day, she stumbles through amusing attempts, delivering unflattering messages like “Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, YOU SMELL BAD!”
The story takes a sweet turn when Puppy, Kitty’s canine friend, notices her efforts and tries to help her. Kitty does eventually succeed in getting her Valentine’s card, and it’s a nice ending to see her excited to finally have her very own card.
“Bad Kitty Does Not Like Valentine’s Day” is a fun blend of humor, and sweetness. The book provides an opportunity for parents to discuss the importance of expressing affection and kindness, even in unconventional ways. The themes of friendship and understanding make it a valuable addition to your child’s library.
I appreciated the clever way the story explored the concept of giving and receiving love. “Bad Kitty Does Not Like Valentine’s Day” is a fun addition to the Bad Kitty series. It entertained my kids, and it entertained me too. When we can agree on a book it’s a win for all of us.
