What We Read This Week: A Busy Creature’s Day Eating

Hi, and Happy Thursday! How is your day going so far? Here another school year has begun, bringing with it a lot of excitement, and of course adjustments to a new routine. For some parents this can be exciting, (yay free time!) And for others it can be sad. For some it can be a little of both. And for others, who homeschool for example, the back to school time can involve a lot of planning and preparation as a new year begins.

Our local library has closed temporarily for renovations (such a bummer!) But before it closed we stopped by for some last minute before school started reads. And while we were there we checked out this book, which my kids loved so much we immediately went and bought our own copy! So for this week, our book read is A Busy Creature’s Day Eating, written by Mo Willems, and published by Hyperion Books for Children. A Busy Creature’s Day Eating is a delightful children’s book that takes young readers on an alphabet journey through the world of a peculiar creature with an insatiable appetite. This book is also a Teacher’s Pick on Amazon!

The story revolves around the endearing creature and his crazy food choices, his queasy tummy, and his loving dad who takes care of him after he’s eaten way too much! All from A to Z. My kids really loved the increasingly wacky food choices, and of course, being in a silly potty humor stage, got the hugest laugh about the letter P “Potty!”

The real magic of A Busy Creature’s Day Eating was in the wacky, unpredictable choices of the curious creature, and in the kindness of his father. I enjoyed the message about curiosity, adventure, and the joy of trying new things (even though the creature takes things way too far and eats things that make him sick!) The creature’s unquenchable hunger is a metaphor for the insatiable curiosity that children possess, and his silliness will definitely make them laugh.

Overall, we found this a really cute way to practice the alphabet. It was unexpected and silly, and it’s impossible to ignore how much it makes my children laugh. I recommend this one! I don’t however recommend the creature’s eating habits. Furniture is for sitting, not for eating!

Have you read this book, or another silly alphabet book you recommend? What are some of your favorite children’s books that you’ve read lately?

Hoping you have a great rest of your Thursday!
