My very best memories of the beach were from when I was an about 15. I had just discovered an entire set of Anne Rice novels in the house where we were staying, and I took book after book to the beach and read them all. With the waves in the background, and the soft shade of the umbrella, I read about everything from the Mayfair witches to the Vampire Lestat. During the evenings we would drive from Daytona Beach to the lovely city of St. Augustine, driving the swampy, scenic route we called “The Loop.” It made it easy to imagine that it was all set in a novel, far away and mysterious.
Today, reading by the beach is still one of my favorite things to do. I have little kids, so this isn’t something I get much time for anymore. But every once in a while when I can, I love to grab a book (or my headphones with an audiobook, far away from the water of course), and enjoy some time in a story. Whenever I do get the opportunity, these are some of my favorite things for beach reading 🏝️💕📚
- A Comfy Chair: A lightweight, foldable chair with a cup holder is the best for relaxing! Comfortable reading makes a book even better. And being able to put your drink in a cup holder instead of the sand is much nicer 😊
- Sun Protection Essentials: Sunscreen and sunglasses provide additional protection for your face and eyes, making it so much easier to read without squinting or worrying about getting a sunburn.
- Beach Umbrella or Tent: I prefer to read in the shade! It’s easier for my eyes not to strain in the sun, and also keeps it cooler and breezier. I love enjoying the ocean breeze while I read, but I try to make sure to anchor it down so it doesn’t blow away and take the relaxing time along with it.
- Lightweight Beach Towel or Blanket: I like laying out a lightweight beach towel or a cozy blanket. The best are soft and sand-resistant option that are large enough to stretch out on while you dive into the pages of your book. Plus, it can double as a makeshift sunshade or picnic spot for having lunch or a snack in between chapters.
- Drinks and Snacks: Reading can make the hours slip by! I like to bring carbonated waters, fruit, and other snacks so that I can spend longer reading before heading home.
- Book Lovers’ Essentials: Of course, the star of the show is the book itself! Whether it’s a thriller, a romance, or a memoir, I try to choose a book that suits my mood and takes me to another world. If you prefer e-books, don’t forget your e-reader or tablet and ensure it’s fully charged beforehand. If an audiobook is easier for you then grab some headphones, but make sure your electronics stay free of sand and water. I like to carry mine in a waterproof bag along with a lint free cloth to wipe them off before putting them away.
- Music or Podcasts: To create a relaxing ambiance, consider bringing a portable speaker, or headphones if you want to listen to a podcast or some music. I usually like reading with just the sound of the waves and the gulls, but I have friends who like to bring speakers and listen to music also.
These essentials are my trusted companions for a day of reading by the sea. Books and the ocean are two of my absolute favorite things, combining them is the best! To me there is nothing as magical as the majesty and mystery of the ocean, and the wonders of a good story. How about you? Do you like to read at the beach? Do you have any special things that help make your reading experience easier? I hope that you have a relaxing and happy weekend with a good story.
Happy beach reading, we love you!
