Happy Memorial Day!
For those who aren’t familiar with this day, here in the United States we celebrate Memorial Day, a day of commemoration for the service members who have died in defense of the United States.
One of the most poignant symbols of Memorial Day in the United States is the beautiful red poppy.
Poppies hold a significant meaning on Memorial Day. The tradition of wearing poppies on Memorial Day originated from the famous war poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae during World War I. The poem describes the red poppies that grew amidst the graves of soldiers in Flanders, a region in Belgium heavily affected by the war. The poppy became a symbol of remembrance for those who lost their lives in service to their country. The vibrant red color of the poppy symbolizes the bloodshed and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers.
Wearing a poppy on Memorial Day is a way for individuals to honor and remember the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. It serves as a visual reminder of the lives lost and the ongoing need to support veterans and their families.
The stunning red of the poppies, the wave of a blue, red and white flag. So many beautiful colors, and so much to remember. As a veteran owned company the memory of those we’ve lost is always present. We are so grateful for the freedoms we have to read good books, to learn, and to express ourselves. They are freedoms to never take for granted. The red of the poppies will never let us forget.
